Sports
Medicine
Society
has changed its emphasis on sports from the passive spectator
to the active participant. The combination of increased
leisure time and an emphasis on exercise as a means of
improving health has led to participation in sports, from
soccer, T-ball, and gymnastics in early childhood to the
Senior Olympics. This increased participation has led to
an increased incidence of injury.
The orthopedic sports
medicine specialist is not only well trained in basic orthopedic
knowledge but athletes often present special considerations
that are not part of the everyday practice of Orthopedics.
The intense desire and determination of the athlete to
return to sports are not commonly encountered in the day
to day practice of orthopedics.
