Ask An Orthopedist: What can one do to speed up the healing process of a hip/leg injury?

Calendar August 8, 2017

Question: Is brief use of an elliptical gym machine helpful for a leg/hip injury? My x-ray showed that nothing was broken but I currently use a cane and still experience a bit of pain. I want a way to help the healing process.

Answer: Without knowing the exact extent of your soft tissue injuries – sprain, strain, tear, etc. – I can only speak in generalities. An elliptical is good for rehabbing lower extremity injuries but does not help with healing. Healing takes time, and needs to occur prior to starting rehab. Once you are given the OK from your doctor to start rehab then the elliptical is one of several things that can be helpful.
